“The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.”
– David Hare (English playwright)

My Articles: Why I Write……..

Writing is how I know what I think! Writing articles is so much different than producing copy for this website. For an article, I can pick a topic that interests me (and that I hope will interest you) and present to you the whole package – not just the version edited for economy of space! I start out thinking I need only write a few lines and end up with a page or more!

My writing is generally based on what I know from experience – personal and professional. I thoroughly enjoy the process of organizing random thoughts into a coherent discourse. And it is this process that helps me clarify my thoughts, both for you and for me!

In my therapy practice, I encourage people to write about their lives, their experiences. I often suggest, if appropriate, lots of letter writing – to be mailed, kept, or destroyed. What we do with the writing is less important to me than the act of actually putting down on paper those thoughts and experiences whose details we often skim over. Just doing that can help us to more clearly understand our feelings and experiences, the first step on the path to feeling better.

Therapeutic writing can ignore the ordinary conventions of grammar, spelling, and structure. This writing is related to journaling and does not need to be seen by eyes other than your own. But – that’s an article I will need to write!

The articles you will find here are meant to give you a broader understanding of how I work and think about the issues people bring into my office. They are also designed to give you some helpful free information you can use now.

From time to time, I’ll be adding articles. Please keep checking back to see what’s new. And, let me know if you’d like more information about any topic I’ve mentioned on this site.

And – some more quotes about the process of writing:

“Writing crystallizes thought and thought produces action.”
-Paul J.Meyer (motivational speaker)

“We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand.”
-Cecil Day Lewis (poet)

Learn as much by writing as by reading.”
-John Dalberg Acton (English historian)

“Writing is thinking. It is more than living, for it is being conscious of living.”
-Anne Morrow Lindbergh (US writer)
