Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.”

ABOUT KAREN:

My Background (and the lessons learned!):

A New York City native, I’ve been a transplanted Californian for over 30 years – but I’m still a New Yorker at heart!

I attended Southern Connecticut State College in New Haven, Connecticut (now Southern Connecticut State University), with double majors in Elementary and Special Education and a minor in Psychology (always my love!). I then spent a graduate year at Boston University to continue my studies in Special Education.

In the ’80s, I returned to school to focus on my primary passion – psychology. I obtained my Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at the California Family Study Center (now Phillips Graduate Institute) and have been licensed to practice psychotherapy as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1986.

Along the way, I gained extensive experience in the public school system, coordinating, teaching, and counseling in programs serving special needs adolescents. My work with adolescents and their families taught me about the influence of both the school and home on the developing teen. I learned so much about the power both parents and teachers have to either support or damage a child’s positive world-view and fragile self-image. As a result of those experiences, a special interest of mine today, as a therapist, is to help adult families reconnect and heal the wounds sustained in those early and often traumatic teen years.

Another lesson learned through my public school experience is that even those who have a good point to make sometimes fail to be heard fully, when their anger and stress interfere with the information they are trying to communicate. A major focus of my work (and one of my passions) involves helping adults and teens get their point across in a non-combative and more effective way.
